How does it work?

You lie on your back with the stretcher under your neck, so your head drops back over the curve and your own head weight does the work. That opens the space through the back of your neck and lengthens muscles that spend the day held short.

It is gentle, self-administered traction rather than the measured, sustained load a clinician would use. Start at 2 to 3 minutes and build to 10 over a fortnight. Ten minutes is the ceiling for most people, and longer is not better.

Will this get rid of my neck hump?

It helps with the tension, and not with the shape. Worth being straight about that, because we sell it.

A neck hump is the position of your upper back and the strength of the muscles holding it there. Traction, massage and percussive therapy do not change the angle of your thoracic spine, and no credible evidence says otherwise.

What they do is reduce the tightness and soreness through the upper traps that comes with that posture. That is the part most people actually feel, and it makes the corrective exercise easier to keep up. Used before your exercises it earns its place. Used instead of them it changes nothing.

Who should not use this?

Do not use the Neck Stretcher, and speak to your GP or physiotherapist first, if any of these apply to you.

Pins and needles, numbness or weakness in an arm or hand
Recent neck injury, whiplash, or any neck surgery
Diagnosed osteoporosis, or a known vertebral fracture
Rheumatoid arthritis affecting the neck
Dizziness, vertigo or visual disturbance when you tip your head back
Known vertebral artery problems, or a history of stroke or TIA
Uncontrolled high blood pressure
You are pregnant, unless your treating clinician has cleared it
